Devious Maids Recap: Notes on a Scandal Free on klikvideo.com

Until scientists come up with a cure for what Office Space so brilliantly dubbed as “A Case of the Mondays,” we may have to settle for a prophylactic dose of Susan Lucci dropping hilarious one-liners on Lifetime’s Devious Maids.

So what if her every line and action as Beverly Hills maven Genevieve Delatour has been done on at least a do en prior TV shows or movies? Lucci somehow makes fresh — or at least so uproarious, you don’t notice a lack of freshness — moments like warning her sexy young maid that she’s called dibs on the gardener, topped with a bree y “I’ve been priming that pump since the day he trimmed my hibiscus!”

If that’s not your cup of Crystal Light, fair enough. For the rest of you, let’s recap the action surrounding our five central characters:

* MARISOL | Our undercover housekeeper once had a maid of her own, we learn in flashback. But now, trying to clear her son’s name for a murder rap, she’s reduced to asking boss Taylor for permission to clean the Powell residence on her day off. Her request is denied, until creepy Adrian shows up and does everything but hold an actual blade to Taylor’s throat to get Marisol into his den on the regular. (At this rate, Marisol’s going to have to come clean to Taylor or risk losing her full-time gig, no? Then again, why wouldn’t she want to grab a full-time spot with the Powells, considering the killing took place in their home?) Speaking of the Powells, Adrian cranks up the skee e-o-meter, shutting the den door behind Marisol when she comes by to work and declaring, ”I love to watch women clean. I find it so soothing.” She manages to discover murdered Flora was his ”confessor, muse and partner in crime,” but arouses Adrian’s suspicion (among other parts) when she uses the word ”inquisitive” in their conversation. When she stumbles across Flora’s note — and the line ”I was raped” — she knows she’s onto something, but Adrian snatches it away, eventually burning it in the fireplace. Let’s hope Marisol doesn’t need to make good on what she told her son: That she knows of ways to get Adrian to tell her almost anything. Also: How can Angela Chase’s dad be so dreadful?

* OILA and VALENTINA | Valentina discovers (or invents?) a mutual appreciation of Hitchcock films with Remi — and ”bumps into him” at a screening of White Heat, impressing his friends in the process. ”Do they know you scrub his toilet?” oila inquires, trying to discourage her daughter’s pursuit of “Mr. Remi.” To try to break any romantic connection, oila plants an idea in Genevieve’s head to throw a party for her college-age son — one where she and Valentina will serve as the waitstaff. Naturally, it ends in tears for Valentina, and oila tells her, ”if you need to hate me for awhile, go ahead.” But Valentina’s not so easily discouraged: When Genevieve spots her crying, Val admits she’s in love with Remi — that her face burns every time she sees Genevieve’s son. Mama Delatour is delighted — she loves love, after all — and reminds Valentina that being a maid “is what you do — not who you are.” Genevieve agrees to help Val win Remi’s heart — without oila’s knowledge. ”The duty of the old is to help the young find love,” she smiles. “And since there’s no old people around — it falls to me.” Anyone else guessing this isn’t going to end well for any of the involved parties?

* CARMEN | Carmen has most (if not all) the fun this week. “God blesses us with nice things. He expects us to use them,” she tells Sam, noting Odessa and Alejandro’s absence while dropping all her clothes and prepping for a dive into the pool. ”I didn’t know you were so…” stammers Sam at the naked display. ”Religious?” asks Carmen, making a splash in more ways than one. Later, she plants a kiss on the guy so he’ll turn a blind eye to her poolside lunch break with Marisol, Rosie and oila. But when she makes it clear she’s not truly interested, he takes offense, especially since she’s been showing ”traditional female signs of encouragement” (like kissing and nudity, to name two). The picture becomes clearer when he hears Carmen singing a mournful ballad that she penned, a farewell to a lover who didn’t/wouldn’t support her dreams. She won’t take that risk again, she reveals, but Sam — at the very least — shows he supports Carmen not getting fired, covering for her when Odessa returns early from the hospital and Carmen’s flouncing around in nothing but a towel. Show of hands: Who thinks Carmen and Sam make a cute couple? And who’s withholding judgement till Sam strips down and joins Carmen on her next skinnydipping sesh?

* ROSIE | Rosie has the worst week, lying to bossman Spence that she recogni es the striped, not-Calvin Klein underwear he found under the bed, and saving Peri from the start of divorce proceedings in the process. Peri makes up a lame excuses, swears on her son’s life that she’s not cheating, but Rosie hilariously uncovers Peri and her boy toy in the act, standing over the bed of iniquity like a stern mother figure, then sweetly asking, ”The coffee: Did you want French roast or Colombian?” Rosie later learns from Spence that he really loves his wife and doesn’t want to put his child through a divorce — even if the relationship isn’t always easy. So she keeps Peri’s secret to herself — and tells Spence that he reminds her of her late hubby Ernesto. Rosie’s not seriously ever going to get romantically involved with her boss, right? I’m chalking up her Ernesto comparison as sweet-yet-benign, not sweet-with-a-side-of-unexpected-lust.

Best Lines

“I need someone who can react when I’m screaming at them!” –Evelyn, explaining to Marisol why she didn’t want a deaf maid

“When a woman’s skin crawls, it doesn’t mean she’s attracted to you, Adrian.” –Evelyn (more of her next week, please?) explaining to Adrian that he’s not likely to bed Marisol

“I should’ve been born rich: You guys know how to pull off poverty — I don’t.” –Carmen, enjoying Alejandro’s riches perhaps a bit too much

“This attitude is why we don’t hang out on weekends.” –Carmen, responding to Rosie’s simple philosophy that sin is wrong

“I’ve been priming that pump since the day he trimmed my hibiscus.” –Genevieve, re. her R-rated plans for her gardener

Dexter Season Premiere Review: Deb Downer Free on klikvideo.com

It was “A Beautiful Day” to jump on board Dexter Morgan’s final slay ride this week, as the Dexter Season 8 premiere took viewers six months into the future.

And in many ways a lot has changed at Miami Metro (Batisa has un-retired and taken over as Lieutenant) and around the station (Quinn is bedding Jamie), with characters forging ahead and moving on (and winning adorable soccer championships!) in the wake of LaGuerta’s death.

Except Deb, that is. In a major, significant, shocking, coke-snorting way… except Deb.

Deb Undercover

Kudos to both the writers and Jennifer Carpenter for taking the character down such a disturbing path. It was an eerie pleasure to watch such a twitchy, energetic, drugged up Deb in her new life, undercover and out of control.

It brings gravitas to a series that was once a dark comedy but is clearly now headed down a merely dark path, with Deb unable to recover from her actions inside that trailer and Dexter reali ing more and more than he has no idea who he is without his sister as a support system. Correction, actually:

Dexter does know who he is without Deb. But it’s a picture he does not want painted, one of a serial killer who has no remorse and – as the fascinating new character of Dr. Evelyn Vogel outlined – no empathy. LaGuerta did not deserve to die, she did not fit Harry’s Code… but Dexter doesn’t care one bit. She was a problem that’s now been solved and he’s had no trouble forgetting she ever existed.

So he’s the opposite of Deb in that regard, someone whose emotions have always spilled over into her love life and her personal life; who care barely order coffee without cursing out the barista or capture a perp without, well, cursing out in joy.

And Dexter has always found safe haven in this connection. If he’s at least loved by Deb, if he can at least be there for his sister, he can’t be all that bad… right? Wrong, he’s starting to wonder.

The tear and rage-filled exchange between Dexter and Deb while both squatted over Briggs’ corpse was perfect in how it summed up this evolved (devolved?) relationship. Deb doesn’t see herself as lost. She’s perfectly in tune with her deeds and the punishment she sees as fit for them. But Dexter? Who is Dexter Morgan? Can he actually be a responsible father and a successful murderer? Where does he turn for any semblance of comfort if the one person who always viewed him as her savior now sees him as the complete opposite?

I shot the wrong person in that trailer. I mean… ouch.

And while Deb was stuck in the past, the premiere did an excellent job of setting up the future. We have a new murderer on the loose and new psychologist in the building.

Dexter and Dr. Vogel

What the heck is the deal with Vogel?!? It’s clear she has more than just a passing interest in Dexter and, based on her age and experience working with the police force, we can assume she knew Harry. But how intimately is the question? And how does she know about The Code? Might she have assisted Harry with it? It’s not a stretch to think someone in her position, with her knowledge base, would come in handy when molding a psychopath into a productive member of society.

So I’m fully on board. I despised Dexter Season 6. I was blown away by the recovery of Dexter Season 7 and I’m impressed with one hour so far of Dexter Season 8.

Despite Batista dismissing the notion of a bench as a tribute, the series is taking LaGuerta’s death very seriously. It’s using that event as a jumping off point for its final run of episodes, tearing Deb and Dexter apart – to bring them back together later? To prove that Dexter cannot continue with his charade of a life and force him to make a decision one way or the other? Between his life as a family man and his long-time Dark Passenger?

I have no idea. But with the mystery of Vogel looming large and an in-depth examination of Dexter’s way of life on tap this season, I’m excited to find out.

What did everyone else think? Grade the Dexter Season 8 premiere now:

‘Once Upon a Time in Wonderland’ Not Just a Limited Series Free on klikvideo.com

When news first broke that the folks over at ABC were going to roll out a spin-off series (of sorts) to their popular fairytale drama ‘Once Upon a Time’, the initial “plan” was for the show to a limited series, receiving a 13 episode order (which is actually standard for all shows); but according to a recent report at Entertainment Weekly, ABC is going to add some additional episodes to that original 13 order, but the spin-off – which is being dubbed Once Upon a Time in Wonderland – won’t be getting the standard 22 episode order but it won’t just get 13 either.

Confused yet? Let’s break this down a little better, shall we?

‘Wonderland’ did receive a 13-episode order when it was picked up by ABC, and like all other new shows the hope is that the ratings will be strong enough during the fall that the powers that be at the network will give the spin-off the additional “back 9″ episodes. But the creators of the show – Adam Horowit and Edward Kitsis – “have a different vision: a self-contained epic romance that’s planned in advance from start to finish”.

What does that mean basically, you may ask? Well, there will be no fillers, “no additional episodes will be ordered beyond the first order”, allowing Horowit and Kitsis to “break down the entire story before the first episode even airs”. This also means that the showrunners (Horowit and Kitsis) [along with their writers] “have figured out how many hours they need”.

Here is what Horowit and Kitsis had to share about this arrangement, “We really want to tell the story without having to worry about how to stretch it for five years. This is not meant to be a 22-episode season. Whatever it ends up being, we’ll have told a complete story, with a beginning, (a) middle and (an) end”.

That doesn’t mean that ‘Wonderland’ will only be around for one season, though, especially if performs well enough. The debut season of the drama will be self-contained, but the story can continue in more seasons should the network brass be happy with its ratings (et al). In other words, “ABC will renew the show for another close-ended adventure if the show is a success”.

‘Once Upon a Time in Wonderland’ will center on the “romance and adventure of two characters, Alice (newcomer Sophie Lowe) and a genie named Cyrus (newcomer Peter Gadiot)” with the story bounces between both Wonderland itself and the outside world where Alice resides.

ABC has yet to announce an official airdate for the debut of ‘Once Upon a Time in Wonderland’, but it is expected to air this fall on Thursday nights at 8/7c.

Nik Wallenda to recount his “Skywire” walk in new Discovery special

After how dominant the ratings and viewership for Skywire Live With Nik Wallenda proved to be last Sunday, Discovery Channel would naturally be looking for any way they could to further capitali e on interest in wire-walker Nik Wallenda’s successful walk across a portion of the Grand Canyon, which enthralled viewers and had social media bu ing. They have found it with Skywire: Nik Talks the Walk, a new special premiering Sunday, June 30, at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery.

In Skywire: Nik Talks the Walk, Nik Wallenda will watch his historic walk from start to finish for the first time and provide a step-by-step account of what he was thinking and experiencing physically with each movement. If you were wondering what was going through Wallenda’s mind, and if he ever had moments of doubt, this special may give you some answers.

Wallenda walked about 1,400 feet across a portion of Grand Canyon in Navajo Nation, at a height of 1,500 feet — without using a tether or net. The original Skywire special drew in about 13 million viewers at the time of the actual walk, and the two-hour program ranked as the No. 1 show in all of television, cable and broadcast, last weekend in total viewers and across key demos, per Discovery.

Skywire: Nik Talks the Walk premieres June 30 at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel.

Heather Morris (Brittany), Mark Salling (Puck), Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Harry Shum Jr. (Mike) were unsurprisingly demoted a couple days ago, but all will likely show up again in some capacity.

Dexter's Top 10 Foes Free on klikvideo.com

The end is near!

Dexter’s final season kicks off this Sunday, June 30th, on Showtime, and features recurring guest stars Charlotte Rampling and Sean Patrick Flanery in notable new roles.

Now with some seasons in the past, Showtime has come right out and told us who the “big bad” will be. We knew it would be Jimmy Smits in Season 3, and John Lithgow in Season 4. Then they played it closer to the vest in Season 5, and tried to trick us a wee bit in Season 6 by telling us that Edward James Olmos was the villain. In Season 7 we were told there’d be no “big bad,” even though Ray Stevenson’s Isaak wound up surpassing our expectations. Now we’re back to keeping secrets. But it’s the final run, so just knowing that Dexter’s story is coming to an end is probably bigger than any one villain.

Proposition 8 plaintiffs get call from President Obama on MSNBC Free on klikvideo.com

The U.S. Supreme Court today handed down two rulings that bolstered same-sex marriage by ruling part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional and allowing a lower court ruling to stand that struck down California’s Proposition 8 ballot initiative, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

The Proposition 8 case that was before the court was Hollingsworth v. Perry, and following the ruling, the plaintiffs in that case — unmarried same-sex couples Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, and Paul Katami and Jeff arrillo — were live on MSNBC along with Chad Griffin of Human Rights Campaign when they received a (somewhat garbled) phone call from President Barack Obama from aboard Air Force One to congratulate them.

“We’re proud of you guys,” said the president, according to an MSNBC transcript, “and we’re proud (ph) to have this in California. And it’s because (ph) of your leadership (ph) things are heading the right way (ph). So you should be very proud today. And, you know, you’re — through your courage, you’ve helped out a lot of people (ph) everywhere (ph).”

“You’re invited to the wedding,” said Paul Katani.

“Okay,” answered President Obama.

Anna Nicole (Lifetime): Was It Worth It? [Review] Free on klikvideo.com

I remember the first time I laid eyes on Anna Nicole Smith. It was a Guess ad in the early 90s and I thought she was stunning. Not your usual waif thin model and extremely blond and made up, there was still just something about her. She kind of slipped off my radar until she married J. Howard Marshall and again until her painful-to-watch reality show in 2002, and finally her death. It seemed that the media was full of all the details of Anna’s life and its sad ending. I thought I watched some quickly put together movie about her back then.

Now, Lifetime is releasing a biopic on Anna Nicole, aptly named Anna Nicole. This movie, however, starts when Anna was just Vickie Lynn Hogan, a small child, and chronicles her rise to fame, or infamy. Naturally, the more interesting aspects of Anna Nicole come in her later years, so the movie does not spend too much time in her childhood days. With a running time of about an hour and a half, there is not much time to get her entire story in, but I thought the movie did quite well in its attempt.

Anna Nicole stars Agnes Bruckner as Anna. At first glance, my initial reaction was “that is no Anna.” As the movie continued on, though I was won over. Reali ing that it would be extremely difficult to have someone transform into a person who had so many different facets to her personality, and some of them showing at the same time, I reali ed Ms. Bruckner actually did a fabulous job. Anna Nicole also brings some well known names to its cast including Martin Landau as J. Howard Marshall, Virginia Madsen as Anna’s mother, Virgie, Cary Elwes as E. Pierce Marshall, and Adam Goldberg in a remarkable dead on Howard K. Stern. Honeslty, I had forgotten about Howard K. Stern’s bi are role in Anna’s life and almost squealed in glee when Adam Goldberg appeared in a scene.

I am not sure why Lifetime decided to release a movie about Anna Nicole at this particular time. It has been about six years since she died and there has been no news surrounding that never ending lawsuit (resolved finally in 2011) or her daughter, Dannielynn, whom Larry Birkhead has mostly kept out of the spotlight. Along with the timing, I am not quite sure of the purpose of the film. Anna Nicole did not reveal any new information that, at least, I had not heard of regarding her life. I think this is the biggest flaw with the movie, it seemed to serve no purpose.

Setting that aside, Anna Nicole was a fun view, especially for someone who was once a fan and followed her for a bit. It was almost like having her back again. Of course, that came with the price of reliving the sad ending to it all. All of the actors brought their characters to life and were actually enveloped a bit into them. I recogni ed them, but did not automatically think of them as I watched.

If you were ever a Anna Nicole fan, or just like to see what she was up to, you should tune into Anna Nicole debuting at 8 pm ET on June 29, 2013. Then come back here and tell me what you thought. Did you learn anything new? Was it worth watching? I would love to hear your thoughts!
