I was none too keen on last week’s Arrow installment, “The Huntress Returns,” but Salvation proved to be a return to form for the series. If the plot was still a bit overcrowded, at least the various pieces felt better integrated with one another and the overall conflict more focused. “Salvation” delivered some significant progress on several fronts, not least of which being the involvement of Roy Harper and his ongoing evolution from street thug to faithful sidekick.
The premise of this episode didn’t grab my attention initially, as the idea of a copycat vigilante is something the show has already touched on earlier this season. Luckily, “Salvation” wasn’t guilty of retreading old ground, and the episode didn’t revolve around Ollie doing battle with another leather-clad, archery-loving assassin. Instead, the so-called “Savior” was just a an ordinary guy with a gun, plenty of adoration for the Hood, and useful knowledge of Starling City’s abandoned subway network. As far as I’m aware, the Savior isn’t based on any pre-existing DC Comics character, but feel free to prove me wrong in the comments section. It really doesn’t hurt for the show to strike out on its own from time to time and worry less about adapting as many DC characters as possible.
