We’re reaching the final few campaigns of Spartacus’ rebellion against Rome and with the bloody end approaching it’s a good time for the series to reflect on the journey so far while also catapulting us into a pivotal, heart-wrenching, moment of the war. “Separate Paths” is filled with emotionally striking moments that give tribute to old friendships borne from common purpose and then delivers one of the series darkest moments.
There are plenty of goodbyes and great conversations to be had throughout the early part of this episode. Crixus’ speech to Spartacus about why he wants to stay behind and fight his way to Rome is rousing and some of Manu Bennett’s strongest work on the show. His resolve to take the fight to Rome, as cra y a plan as it is, was convincing to the point you almost believe he could pull it off. I’m glad that the split of their forces was handled amicably instead of one driven by anger between the two.
