The cable network FX is working on a drama pilot based on the Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan book trilogy The Strain that will star actor Corey Stoll (‘House of Cards’) as we reported here in the lead role of CDC doctor Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather, who investigates the case of a vampire virus that infects New York.

And now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Sean Astin – best known for his role in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ franchise has joined the cast. Astin will play Jim Kent, a “savvy and trustworthy guy who is an open political operative of the Canary Group and best friends with Goodweather and Nora (actress Mia Maestro from ‘Alias’ and ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn 2′)”.

The cast will also include John Hurt (as we reported here), Kevin Durand (‘Lost’) and Jonathan Hyde.

Executive producer Carlton Cuse (‘Lost’) had this to share on Twitter: “We are thrilled to have the amazing Sean Astin join the cast of ‘The Strain’”. The pilot will be directed by del Toro and will be co-written by him and Hogan with Cuse acting as executive producer.

FX has yet to announce if ‘The Strain’ pilot will be picked up to series, but it has “already assembled a writing staff and FX has picked up additional scripts, which is a strong sign the pilot will earn a series order”.
