FX’s newest drama, The Bridge is a change of pace for the network. Established shows like Justified, Sons of Anarchy and American Horror Story move at a fast pace and are punctuated by shocking, sometimes over the top, moments of violence. In what could be FX’s answer to The Killing, The Bridge is a remake of a Scandinavian show and the pilot plays its shocks and twists quietly for the most part, content to have us just get to know the lead characters as they get to know each other.
We’re introduced to detectives Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) and Marco Rui (Demian Bichir) as they meet, standing on opposite sides of the border between Mexico and the U.S. over a dead body. Earlier that night someone shut off all lights and cameras in order to place a body directly across the border. This body turns out to be an El Paso judge who recently ruled against Mexicans loitering on the sidewalk, and from there the case only gets messier. Bad for the detectives, good for us viewers.
