Warning: full episode spoilers follow.
Well, it’s a damned good thing SyFY already renewed Defiance for a second season. If this season were all we ever got out of Defiance, the show would have taken its place alongside other frustratingly unresolved sci-fi fare like Stargate Universe and Twin Peaks. But while there was some amount of frustration in seeing so few of the ongoing conflicts actually resolved in this finale, at least we have plenty to look forward to next year.
This episode was true to its title, as everything really did begin to break down in the town of Defiance this week. The two-pronged conflict carried over from last week. On one hand, Amanda Rosewater fought a losing battle to retain her position as mayor against the ruthless Datak Tarr. On the other, Irisa dealt with the aftereffects of Doc Yewll’s experimentation and what it meant as far as her mysterious destiny. And there were various related conflicts mixed in between, whether it was Stahma’s attempts to salvage her marriage or the Earth Republic’s impending takeover of the city. It was nothing if not an eventful conclusion to the season.
