Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
“The Magician” may not be quite as accessible as last week’s procedural “The Prisoner” but it does offer some pivotal moments in this young series with a focus on strong character building. Characters like Loren o and Lucre ia are stretched to their limits and we discover a far more disturbing side to them. Da Vinci is clever as always but continues to find torment in his dual life style as artist and war engineer.
Giuliano acts as a voice of reason this week as he tries his best to convince Loren o that Becchi being the traitor isn’t so black and white. Giuliano has a few moments this week that do a great job of developing his character from something other than a whipping boy for Da Vinci’s insults. The sincerity in his concern for Becchi is heartwarming as the childhood bond he had for this father figure really shines through; making Becchi’s ultimate fate all the more painful.
