Warning: full episode spoilers follow.
I reviewed the first half of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble premiere a few days ago when that episode appeared on iTunes. Both halves aired on Disney XD today, forming an hour-long pilot that more or less established the tone and direction of this new series. It’s still a little soon to be judging whether Assemble is truly a worthy follow-up to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but it’s clear at least that this new show isn’t the disaster some Marvel fans were fearing.
Part 2 of “The Avengers Protocol” wrapped up this initial conflict with Red Skull and M.O.D.O.K. Those two villains were much more of a background presence than they were in the first half, mainly sitting back and letting M.O.D.O.K.’s mind-controlling nanobots do the job for them. As cliche as an Avenger vs. Avenger conflict is, it played well with the notion that the team dynamic is generally more temperamental and Whedonesque than it was in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. That dynamic was in full force with this episode. On the whole I think this movie-inspired approach is a boon for the series. Characters like Thor and Hawkeye seem to have more personality than they did in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. More than any relationship, the violent but playful rivalry between Thor and Hulk has translated well from the film.
