While plenty of hit movies have been turned into animated series, the existence of Beetlejuice: The Animated Series is still pretty notable. Looking back at the landscape of Saturday morning cartoons (back when those were a big deal for the broadcast networks), there had been a few involving ghosts and monsters, but Beetlejuice was still pretty out there. Here was a show centered on, well, a dead guy and his dead cohorts and the series embraced its strange and unusual trappings much more than most other shows aimed at such a young audience.
The show was loosely based on the film, focusing on young Lydia Deet and the “Ghost with the most” himself, Beetlejuice; the latter re-imagined as a far friendlier presence, who accompanies Lydia on adventures he himself tends to initiate, sometimes in Lydia’s world, but often bringing the duo into the “Neitherworld” and encounters with all sorts of undead folks.
