The average Doctor Who season isn’t exactly what you’d call a ‘quiet’ affair, and yet even by Who-vian standards, Season Seven was a tumultuous one.
Not only did it have to provide a suitably heartfelt and fitting end for two of the series’ most beloved companions yet, but it had to introduce and familiarise their replacement, set the groundwork for the biggest TV birthday celebration of all time, break new and exciting narrative ground, and answer to a self-imposed weekly rule of crafting done-in-one stories grandiose and high-concept enough to warrant their own movie poster.
Unsurprisingly, given that’s a collective task greater, more fearsome and fanboy/girl-titillating than a Dalek/Cyberman/Rani threeway, Steven Moffatt’s grand vision occasionally faltered. But considering those lofty ambitions, Season Seven still succeeded where it really counted – with strong character work, sporadically genius story concepts, and some show-altering twists that ensure we’re as ja ed as ever for the forthcoming TV event of the semi-century.
