Based on Scott Thorson’s autobiography recounting his years as Liberace’s employee and lover, Behind the Candelabra marks what director Steven Soderbergh claims is his final film before his retirement (or sojourn or whatever it really ends up being). The film, which debuted at the Cannes film festival before airing this weekend on HBO, stars Michael Douglas as the garish entertainment icon Liberace and Matt Damon as Scott.
Scott works as a dog handler in the movies when he meets Liberace backstage at a concert. He soon finds himself in a torrid and eventually longterm relationship with the world-famous pianist. The two men live together and are essentially domestic partners decades before that term was truly in use, although Scott really is at the mercy of Liberace’s wealth and whims. (Scott says he’s bisexual, although we only ever see him with men in this movie.)
