Note: Full spoilers for The Americans season finale follow.
The Americans ended its first season with a terrifically exciting episode, putting Phillip and Eli abeth in greater danger than ever and setting up plenty to deal with in Season 2.
The fact that Phillip and Eli abeth knew just how precarious a situation they were in during the finale, but had misidentified the source of that danger, was a brilliant touch. They had two big missions to accomplish; meeting with the Colonel and picking up the tape from Weinberger’s office, but they were sure it was the Colonel meeting that was the suspicious one.
Eli abeth’s plan, making sure Phillip could escape with the kids to Canada, as she approached what she assumed was likely a set up that would end in her capture, was a wonderful look at her perspective. She would sacrifice everything for her country, and yet she loves her family and wants the best for them – and was sure that meant the kids should be with Phillip. Phillip surprising her by switching their tasks of course underlined his love for her, as he refused to let her be the one to take the fall… even as he was unwittingly sending her right into the actual set up.
