Warning: full spoilers for the finale follow.
It’s been a long journey, and tonight Dunder Mifflin closed its doors forever. There is tremendous pressure on a television show’s season closer; and nearly insurmountable expectations for a series finale when a show has meant as much to viewers and fans as The Office has over the last 9 years. There have been some pretty notable misses over the years, and some that many would hail as the standard for how a finale should be done (M.A.S.H. is perhaps the most iconic.)
Earlier this season I’d been concerned that The Office had gone somewhere that many fans did not want to follow. It seemed possible that, after all of those wonderful years of strong writing and compelling performances, that the series may just peter out. Yet the last extra 15 minutes of this super-si ed finale had me not only in tears, but jotting down lines of dialogue faster than the actors could deliver them.
