Warning: Full spoilers from the episode to follow.
This week’s Futurama was a Bender-heavy episode, and these days that can go either way. Some Bender stories can still be quite entertaining — not as innovative as they used to be, but definitely funny. But “Forty Percent Leadbelly” was neither of those things, unfortunately, and for the most part this episode was just flat-out boring. Not bad, just bland.
I almost hate to say it, but Bender seems to have kind of run his course at this point. That’s not to say he’s still not good for a laugh or that he didn’t once have great stories worth telling. Indeed, some of the best Futurama episodes have prominently featured Bender. But in recent years, his character has steadily become less and less interesting. He pretty much recycles and repurposes the same three or four catchphrases and falls into the same three or four basic story arcs — usually ones that involve him assuming different professions or swindling others out of their good fortune (or sometimes both at once).
