Family Tree “The Austerity Games” Season 1 Episode 3 airs Sunday June 2 2013 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO.
Episode Synopsis: Season 1 Episode 3 “The Austerity Games” – Bea (Nina Conti) and Monk audition to perform at a children’s birthday, when Tom (Chris O’Dowd) starts digging deeper into the life of his grandfather William, who may have competed in the 1948 London “Austerity Games,” a far cry from those of 2012. After learning about the games from Mr. Pfister (Jim Piddock), Tom visits his great-aunt Victoria’s friend Mildred (Barbar Bolton), who is able to shed some light on William’s former athletic prowess, and on why Victoria left Tom the chest of family curios. With Keither’s help, Tom and Pete (Tom Bennett) visit the gym where Tom’s grandfather William trained for the games, and meet some old-timers who knew him. While at the gym, Pete bravely accepts a challenge from a much younger timer. Bea and Monk perform their first professional gig at a wedding reception.
Show Summary: Centers on 30-year-old Tom Chadwick who, after losing his job and his girlfriend, begins exploring his family heritage after inheriting a mysterious box from a great aunt he never met. Unsure of his identity, he uncovers a world of unusual stories and characters as well as a growing sense of who he and his real family are.
