First off, apologies for this going up two weeks after Community’s season finale aired. I was off in New York last week covering Upfronts, and unable to take the time do write this review until now. Now, on to the subject at hand…
Community fans went into Season 4 feeling far less joyous than usual. The show had long ago settled into its “cult” status, with a small but highly passionate fanbase who were deeply invested in the show – and were on pins and needles every season waiting to see if it would get renewed. But finding out that the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, had been taken off the series by Sony and NBC was a gut punch, quickly taking the air out of the victory that was Season 4’s very existence. Harmon had made Community a very offbeat, unique series with an incredibly distinct voice. Could Community be good without him? Yes, as there are other talented writers out there, several already working on the series. But would it feel the same? That was highly doubtful, so the big hope was that New Community was a good show too, in its own way.
