Warning: Full spoilers for The Following Season 1 follow…
The Following was the first of the midseason’s controversially violent series to hit the air, with the wake of the Newtown tragedy hovering over its premiere back in January like a cloud. Soon after, The Walking Dead returned to finish off its third season and then Bates Motel and Hannibal (the latter a bit unexpectedly, rushed in to fill the gap left by Do No Harm) followed. With The Following, Kevin Williamson (Scream, The Vampire Diaries) was looking to create a long-form scare fest that featured a calculating, charismatic madman toying with the ex-FBI agent who brought him down and it succeeded in finding a devoted, macabre audience. The results however, story-wise, were a mixed bag; some elements working and some grating.
