White House Correspondents Dinner 2013
Saturday, April 27
C-SPAN, 6:30pm ET (red carpet coverage on E! Online at 6pm)
It’s not often you want to make sure you’re watching C-SPAN on a Saturday night, eh? But that’s where you’ll need to tune in to see the annual White House Correspondents Association Dinner — a.k.a. “nerd prom” — in which all the normal combatants from the press and the world of politics put aside their everyday spats for a night of camaraderie in a roast-like atmosphere.
This year’s host is Conan O’Brien, who last hosted in 1995 when he was early into his run as host of Late Night on NBC. Past hosts have included Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Wanda Sykes, Craig Ferguson, Stephen Colbert (who really ruffled George W. Bush’s feathers), Cedric the Entertainer, Drew Carey, Darrell Hammond and Jon Stewart. Tough acts to follow, but Coco remarked to Politico that he’s ready. “I’ve done tougher,” he says.
The event has gotten some criticism over the past few years for getting a bit too Hollywood. Tom Brokaw, for example, said he was skipping this year’s fete after seeing so much attention paid last year to Lindsay Lohan. He’s probably not all that thrilled either that E! is going to be covering the red carpet. (We’re not jonesed about that either, Tom.)
Who’s Going to Be There? The guest list is always a game-time decision, but expected to make an appearance are: Courteney Cox, the cast of Duck Dynasty, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kristin Chenoweth, Kate Walsh, Ashley Judd (who will probably have to endure a joke or two about her rumored run for office), Josh Gad, Eli abeth Banks, Nicole Kidman, Olivia Munn, Harvey Weinstein, Jon Bon Jovi, Shaquille O’Neal, Scarlett Johansson, the cast of Modern Family, Jessica Alba, Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn from Scandal, Tracy Morgan, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Renner, Fred Armisen, New York Giant Victor Cru , Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey, Kathleen Turner, Madeline Stowe, Gold Medal gymnast Gabby Douglas, Michael J. Fox, Matthew Perry, Michael Douglas, Claire Danes, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones and pop star Psy. Maybe John Boehner and Harry Reid will lead the room in a “Gangnam Style” dance.
