Few things in life are more aggravating than having your favorite TV series be prematurely canceled after a major cliffhanger. That pain and turmoil formed the basis of this week’s Big Bang Theory, as Sheldon reacted poorly to the cancellation of Alphas. The average nerd would just sigh wistfully and move on to waiting for the new Arrested Development season to hit Netflix, but Sheldon isn’t one to take such an offense lying down. His inner turmoil and complete inability to deal with improper closure led to a number of humorous moments this week.
It was funny to watch Sheldon try to muscle his way into renewing Alphas by repeatedly calling SyFy, though I wish we could actually have seen him do more of the voice disguises that were alluded to. But the meat of this conflict came in a clever pairing between Sheldon and Amy. Amy put her neuroscience skills to the test in an attempt to wean Sheldon of his compulsions. It was nice to see Amy take a more active role in the plot rather than serve as the butt of everyone’s jokes as she often has been of late (particularly in the previous episode). This arrangement also allowed the writers to touch on Amy’s lingering resentment at Sheldon’s unwillingness to show affection or any real emotional growth in their relationship. That’s a simmering conflict that has yet to boil over, but at least it’s being acknowledged.
