Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
The penultimate episode of The Americans’ first season was a big one, with a lot changing by the end of the hour.
The episode was called “The Oath” and was bookended by characters reciting oaths – Nina, an oath of dedication to her country; Phillip, an oath of marriage. Both were said by people hiding huge truths and intent on breaking the very vows they were stating, and neither were happy about that fact.
It was one thing to see Nina begin to hold back from telling Stan everything actually going on at her job, including her new position working with Directorate S (!), but that final scene… Well, damn, I didn’t expect Nina to make that full confession, but it certainly was exciting to see occur. And her final words clearly were indicating to Arkady, yes, she could be punished immediately – but she also could be used to manipulate the FBI.
