Ice Cream Girls Series 1 Episode 2 (ITV) Review Free on klikvideo.com

I didn’t really think much of last week’s opener for Ice Cream Girls, but have to admit that this second episode was a big improvement. By adding some true nastiness into the equation, and vilifying one of its leading ladies, things became a little more interesting. It’s not just a revenge thriller now, though Poppy is still in the habit of lurking outside of windows, but a drama that has the potential to critique the justice system in sensitive cases like this.

But it might just be an entertaining drama, with a great villain in Marcus to boo and hiss at. This isn’t light and cheerful material, however, with the nature of Marcus’ abuse of both Serena and Poppy expanded on in this episode. It’s a sad portrait of two vulnerable and underage girls who are being exploited by a master manipulator and, what’s even more troubling is the unwillingness of an ex-girlfriend to help them, even when she sees the full extent of what’s been going on.

I’m still very unsure about Serena, and this week’s information informs us that she lied to the court so that Poppy would be the one who took the fall for their crime. We won’t know until next week who actually delivered the first blow, but it’s being suggested right now that Serena was the one who finished the job. You can’t blame her, given the circumstances, but you also can’t blame Poppy for wanting to destroy the life she’s built for herself in the intervening years.

It’s all a little more complicated than I thought, and that makes the journey towards resolution a lot more entertaining to watch. And now there’s a reporter digging into the case and, if we’re to believe that his feelings for Poppy go a little bit beyond just pumping her for information (let’s hope so, anyway), he’s likely to uncover the truth of that night. Overall, this episode was quite a grim experience that will most likely be vital to contextualising next week’s final instalment, and I’m interested in what the answers are.

What did you think of the episode? Who do you think is to blame for the murder? Let us know in the comments below.
