At the start, some years ago, when we saw that fabulous pilot episode, we saw Raylan as an angry man hiding behind a cool guise that slipped off more than once.
Season 1 developed it a bit and Seasons 2 and 3 touched on it, but it was never really developed developed. It was, in my opinion (and you’re certainly welcome to disagree), never a leading force in any plot from that pilot episode on – which is a shame. This was maybe the best part of Raylan and something I don’t think many on-screen characters have ever had: a strong, well-hidden anger at the world that bitterly bubbles up to the surface into cunning but acerbic wit and cruelty when his hackles were raised (and that happens often). In fact, I can’t think of another character like that in TV history. With Raylan, we’d seen that happen a few times, but without such pronounced anger.
