Mad Men returned with another two-hour premiere, though ultimately, maybe that was unneeded. I love these characters and it’s great to see them again, but “The Doorway” felt a bit overlong and unfocused for much of it, though some of the final scenes did help tie things together more.
I almost wish, given the importance it has later, we’d spent more time with Don in Hawaii. The early scenes show him as seeming distracted and basically going through the motions of having “fun on vacation.” But his encounter with a young G.I. and his inclusion in their wedding seem to be the tipping point for viewing the trip in a whole different light that could have been extended even further.
