Oprahs Next Chapter: Mark Burnett and Roma Downey talk ‘The Bible’ controversy

Emmy award-winning producer Mark Burnett and actress Roma Downey, the famous husband-and-wife team behind History’s controversial ratings hit The Bible, will talk about their careers, the miniseries and the recent dustup over their onscreen Satan on this Sunday’s Oprahs Next Chapter.

The all-new episode premieres at 9pm ET/PT on OWN.

Burnett and Downey will explain what drove them to create The Bible — which they describe as much “a movement” as a miniseries — and discuss their heartbreak upon reali ing that the first appearance of Jesus in the TV epic had been eclipsed by an uproar about whether their “Satan,” Moroccan actor Mehdi Oua ani, deliberately resemabled President Barack Obama.

Oua ani has said that he’s since found the silver lining in all the chatter, which he describes as “nonsense.”

The pair also introduces actor Diogo Morgado, who portrayed Jesus (and whose smoldering good looks compel Winfrey to happily describe him as “Hot Jesus”) and what it was like to have The Bible go head-to-head with AMC’s ombie phenom, The Walking Dead on Sunday nights.

WINFREY: What does this say about our culture?  About our yearning for something deeper, for a divine connection.  What does this say?

DOWNEY: I think that people clearly are hungry for spirit, they’re hungry for God and they’re hungry for purpose and they have spoken here, a hundred million people.

WINFREY: A hundred million people.

DOWNEY: Have spoken.

BURNETT:  It’s just beginning, Oprah.  It’s just beginning.

WINFREY: You know what’s interesting is that when the finale occurred that the two biggest shows on television was The Bible,  Jesus, crucifixion and The Walking Dead. ombies.  Jesus vs. the ombies. What do you think that fascination is?

DOWNEY: We were delighted throughout the run of the series [that] we saw various headlines. “God Beats ombies” was my particular favorite.
