Well, Vegas finally came back after the longest hiatus in tv history. I’ve missed it. They’ve moved the show to Friday nights, which we all know means they’re planning to cancel it. I truly hope they don’t. It’s a wonderful little show that deserves a chance.
A few thoughts about “Little Fish”:
Ralph and Co. spent their time hunting down a dirtbag who was pimping out underage girls. They caught one of the guys who worked in the count room at The Savoy with an underage girl named Patricia and tried to get him to reveal the pimp’s name. But in the middle of Ralph’s interrogation, Agent Byrne burst in and basically cut Ralph’s legs out from under him. He told the john that the state would drop all charges if he agreed to testify about how Savino works the skim at The Savoy. Needless to say, Ralph wasn’t pleased. Yes, Ralph wants to nail Savino, but at the same time, he doesn’t want a guy running around town beating up and pimping out underage girls. Ralph tried to get Patricia to tell him who the pimp was, but she was much more afraid of him than she was of Ralph. Jack was worried that Mia was going to get sent to prison, so he told her that her employee was about to tell the feds everything. Mia gave Patricia $ 3000 and a bus ticket, told her to go to Chicago and she would be taken care of. With the only witness to the statutory rape gone, the feds were forced to drop their case. However, before Patricia left, she wrote a letter to Ralph telling him who the pimp was and where he could be located. Ralph and Jack got the pimp, and the FBI agent of course took the credit for it.
I don’t like Agent Byrne. He’s a real wiener. I understand wanting to nail Savino and Co. That’s a valid and noble goal. But the way he went about it was all wrong. You don’t walk into an interrogation and totally undermine the authority of the sheriff. It makes it that much harder for him to do his job in a town that is slowly but surely being infested by mobsters. Also, Byrne isn’t really interested in taking down Savino because it’s the right thing to do. He wants to arrest Savino so he can get his name into the papers and get famous for taking down the mob. He’s really just an unpleasant person. I hope that Ralph puts him in his place soon.
I’m also having a problem with Jack telling Mia about the arrest. I mean, I understand why he did it. He loves her and he doesn’t want her to go to prison. But at the same time, he’s a cop. He has a duty to the people of Las Vegas, and running to tell Mia about their investigations isn’t the best way to serve and protect. That’s one of the problems with getting hooked up with someone in the mob. There’s a constant conflict between doing the right thing and protecting the person you love even though they’re on the wrong side of the law. It also raises the question of just how far Jack is willing to go to protect Mia. This time it was just telling her about the arrest, but what about next time? Would Jack give her a heads up before the feds bust her? Would he let her get away with murder?
Jack continues to show himself to be a pretty smart cookie. He burst into Savino’s office under the pretense of beating Savino down for setting him up to kill Johnny. They got into it, but that wasn’t the real reason that Jack went there. He needed access to Savino’s phone. Jack had the phone company set up a tap the phone in the hopes that they could catch Savino in illegal activity. I was pretty impressed. I think Jack had every right to go there and give Savino a good beating for what he did. But it’s much more in line with Jack’s character for him to have a deeper reason for going there. It was a very smart move, and hopefully they’ll be able to find out that Dirty DA is on Savino’s payroll. I have a feeling that Savino’s downfall is going to come because he keeps underestimating Ralph and Jack. He thinks they’re nothing more than stupid, backwoods cowboys but they are obviously so much more than that. I don’t think he’s got any idea just how smart and resourceful the Lamb boys are.
Jack isn’t the only one that revealed some layers. Mia showed two very different sides of herself. On the one hand, she saved Patricia’s life. If the pimp or if Savino found Patricia, they would kill her to protect themselves. So yes, Mia helped Patricia to save herself but she didn’t have to do what she did. She could’ve let Vince and his boys handle it. Mia gave Patricia the one thing she desperately wanted; a chance at a new life away from Las Vegas. Despite Mia’s underlying selfish reasons for helping Patrica, it was still a very kind thing to do. But on the other hand, Mia didn’t have so much compassion for the john. The only reason she didn’t have him killed was that she knew it would bring more heat from the FBI and the sheriff’s department. But whereas Mia was understanding, compassionate, and almost motherly with Patricia, she was cold, detached, and cruel with the john. I can’t say that I felt sorry for him though. I feel no sympathy for pedophiles.
All in all, this was a pretty good episode. I really enjoyed Ralph’s interactions with Patricia. Although he said he couldn’t understand her pain, that wasn’t entirely true. He knew exactly how she felt because he felt that kind of pain when his wife died. It’s always nice to see the softer side of Ralph though because he’s generally so gruff. It also looks like Dixon has been bitten by the love bug, but I’m not entirely sure that’s what it is. He obviously thinks Violet is pretty, and he seems to like her a great deal but it seems more like lust than love. I could be wrong though. Dixon is headed all the way to California to get her back. So we’ll have to see how this plays out. I’m also interested to see whether Ralph is going to have a problem with Yvonne singing at The Savoy. So what did y’all think of this episode of Vegas?
