A new, more loving, side to Norma’s mothering was revealed on this week’s Bates Motel. Well, we see a glimpse of her compassionate and mamma lion nature just prior to the ensuing explosion of death and insanity, in any event. Last week’s episode crystalli ed the fact that Norman has a tendency to enter fugue states in which he sees and hears things that are not there. Like his mother instructing him to do things, for example! This is, of course, a direct link to Psycho and Norman’s belief that he was his mother.
The show had hinted that Norma was aware of Norman’s condition, but this marked the first time that we’ve seem them openly discuss it. It becomes clear that, as ill equipped as she is to do it, Norma truly wants to protect her son. She has likely done many things already with that goal in mind – moving to White Pine Bay and pulling him out of the hospital among them.
